Our Friends from Frolix 8 (Panther Science Fiction) review

Posted : 2 years, 2 months ago on 9 February 2022 05:02 (A review of Our Friends from Frolix 8 (Panther Science Fiction))

I just finished reading this quite strange Philip K Dick novel. The setup and start is quite slow as we see a typical Dick "everyman" Nick Appleton take his son for psi testing which is rumoured to be fixed so that only "New Men" can obtain positions of power. Over the start we find out that earth is ruled by various people including the "Unusual" which has psychic abilities and the New men which have super intelligence. The rest of the population is considered the "old Men" and are just normal humans at the bottom rung of the ladder. We also find out that one famous Old man Thors Provini who lead some sort of rebellion has gone into deep space and will return to overthrow the leaders. Provini does return with the help of a alien and things get weirder...

This I think is Dicks most broadly written satirical book as the despotic leader is like a cartoon character. Dick also manages to throw in his "dark hairded girl the main character is obsessed with" which could be the first incarnation of the manic pixe type girl stereotype.

The book picks up the closer Provini gets to Earth and is a good read overall. I liked it as a Dick fan but its NOT typical Dick in many ways

Ghost Squad
fairly predictable by the numbers family oriented film about a group of bullied children who accept a bet to stay a night in ahaunted house to get their bullies off their backs - almost The Goonois in a haunted house. One for young kids only I guess

Planet of the Apes
I rarely re- watch films but after seeing a fascinating documentary on youtube about this classic I thought Id see how this film stands the test of time, I had originlly watched this in the 70s or 80s Still largely good. The soundtrack is suitably alien and the ape masks are still great. Possibly the weakest part is the ape buildings which almost look Flinstone-ish. Lost of snippets of humpur in there...and of course it has that iconic ending One of my favourite moments is watching the apes in the jury at the trial scene and at one time they are actually doing the 3 wise monkeys thing of see no evil hear no evil talk no evil...kind of funny

a below average predictable low budget horror - too many cliches used here but with no flair. Best to avoid this one

The Advent Calendar
Nice different French language horror where a paraplegic woman is given an advent box which she quickly discovers requires her to kill to gain what she desires. If you take out the gory obvious horror parts this could be a Twilight Zone episode as it stands on a moral dilemma. Worthwhile

The Scary of Sixty-First
Low budget horror which tells the story of 2 women who rent an apartment that has apparently been used in Epsteins sex trafficing. Its attempts at shocks are strange and laughable and generally this film is quite bad. However I think it deserves credit for the subject matter and the balls to actually relate it to real life events. Anyone liking the British royal family might be offended by this when one of the women becomes possessed with having Prince Andrew - who is probably not Prince now

That's Adequate
very obscure fake documentary about a film studio that throws loads of short film genre parodies into the mix. Its a bit of a hit and miss affair but quite funny most of its length
